Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need to know how to speak Mandarin to study in China?

For the academic side, no. There are hundreds of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees designed for foreigners taught 100% in English. However, for your day-to-day life off-campus, learning the basics of the language is highly recommended, and the universities themselves include free Mandarin classes during the first year to facilitate your integration.

Can international students work in China during their studies?

The rules are quite strict. Historically, it was not allowed, but current legislation authorizes long-term students to undertake internships and part-time work off-campus, provided they obtain formal authorization from their own university and have this approval stamped on their Residence Permit by the immigration department. Working freely without this registration is not permitted.

How does health insurance work in China?

The Chinese government requires all international students to purchase specific mandatory health insurance for foreign students (usually the Ping An plan or a similar one approved by the Ministry), which is paid directly at the time of enrollment at the university.

When are the application deadlines for Chinese universities?

For the academic year starting in September, applications and official scholarship requests close quite early, usually between March and April. Some institutions extend non-scholarship applications until June, but preparing your application at the end of the previous year is vital to secure a spot at the best universities.
